GOLKAR FIGURE SUPPORTS YUDHOYONO
Jakarta, May 9 (ANTARA) - A Golkar Party figure expressed support for Democrat Party's presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Saturday.
Fadel Mohammad, the chairman of Gorontalo Golkar Party chapter, confirmed his support through his participation in the declaration of support for Yudhoyono, read out after the conclusion of second national meeting of the Peaceful, Justice and Prosperous Movement (Garansi).
Mohammad flanked Garansi's chief Radiyo Gambiro reading out the declaration, along with Garansi leaders from 22 provinces.
After the ceremony, Fadel wearing a Garansi uniform, said he attended the ceremony upon his personal capacity and did not carry Golkar Party attributes.
"I have long been active in Garansi," he said.
Fadel who is currently governor of Gorontalo province in Sulawesi said his support to Yudhoyono would not cause a problem within Golkar because the party had said it would allow its cadres to support anyone so long as they would not carry party attributes.
Golkar has decided to name its general chairman, Jusuf Kalla, to the party's candidate for the presidential election on July 8, and Wiranto, the general chairman of the People's Conscience Party (Hanura), to be his running mate.
"I appreciate the leadership of Jusuf Kalla which is very democratic," he said.
Fadel denied the opinion that his support to Yudhoyono was part of his efforts to seek nomination as Yudhoyono' running mate.
Until now Yudhoyono who is currently also head of state has not yet named any candidate for his running mate.
Radiyo meanwhile said Fadel came to the ceremony because he had long cooperated with Garansi.
"Fadel is a people's economy champion. Garansi also has commitment to developing people's economy," he said.
In its political statement Garansi confirmed its support to Yudhoyono's bid for his reelection, based upon Yudhoyono's record in bring about changes and progress in the past five years.
"Garansi hopes Yudhoyono will have a vice presidential candidate who is able to synergize with him in the framework of safeguarding the unitary state of Indonesia," it said in the statement.
Garansi in the statement also expressed determination to maximize efforts to assure Yudhoyono's victory in the election. ***
