SUPPORT FOR YUDHOYONO`S REELECTION BID INCREASING
Jakarta, May 9 (ANTARA) - Support for Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY)'s bid for the presidency continues to increase such as from the GPS (Pro-SBY Movement) and Garansi (Movement for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for Indonesia).
The GPS declared the formation of its branches for Java, Kalimantan, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara here on Saturday.
On May 1 former figure of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) Alex Asmasoebrato meanwhile expressed his wish to declare an "SBY for President Again Movement."
The chairman of the Federation of Indonesian Independent Workers Associations (Gaspermindo), Jumhur Hidayat, meanwhile had declared a "People's Coalition for SBY" on May 3.
GPS chapters had earlier been established in Jakarta and Sumatra. The GPS's head for regional and network affairs, Agus Muldya, said in line with its target of reaching out to non-voters, floating mass and youths, GPS figures in regions consisted of community figures who were so far independent.
He said the non-voter movement was actually an antithesis of authoritarian government. "Right now the condition is no longer relevant. Indonesia has become a democracy," he said in his written statement.
Therefore, the GPS would ask people who had so far abstained from the elections to give their votes in the next presidential election on July 8.
He said the GPS also wanted to convey the aspirations of the people who wished to see the election to finish in just one round to enable the immediate resumption of economic activity and that people could work as usual.
The GPS believed people wished the election would run peacefully and in a civil way, not become a mere arena for competing for power.
"God willing, the process of democracy will run smoothly and the number of abstainers will be small and the government to be formed by the winner will keep the country on the right track to become a center of civilization in the 21st century," he said.
Muldya said the GPS chapters for Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua would be declared in Makassar on May 12.***
