INDONESIA`S QUOTA TO PLACE WORKERS IN S KOREA REDUCED

Surakarta, Indonesia, May 9 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's quota to send workers to South Korea has been reduced from 9,000 in 2008 to 5,000 in 2009, head of the Indonesian Workers Placement and Protection Agency (BNP2TKI) Moh Jumhur Hidyat said.

"South Korea is suffering by the impact of the global crisis so that it had reduced the quota for Indonesian workers. After its economy has improved, the quota will be increased again," Jumhur Hidayat said here on Saturday.

He made the remarks after opening Korean-language tests for 41,756 Indonesians seeking work in South korea which were held simultaneously at a number of institutes of higher learning in Indonesia.

Placement of Indonesian workers in South Korea is done under a cooperation agreement between the two governments.

Hidayat said that Indonesia placed 12,000 Indonesian workers in 2008, exceeding its quota while in 2009, the Korean government only provided a quota for 5,000 workers only.

"I don't know whether this year the quota can be exceeded or not," Hidayat said.

On the occasion, Hidayat reminded the Korean language test participants or people who wanted to work in South Korea not to be tempted by people who promised employment but asked for money.

"People who promise to provide employment but ask for money must be cheating," he said.

Indonesian workers receive an average pay of Rp8.5 million per month in South Korea. It can reach up to between Rp10 million and Rp15 million per month if overtime payment is taken into account.***
