COPENHAGEN CONFERENCE MUST DISCUSS OCEAN ISSUES: MINISTER

Manado, Indonesia, May 9 (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said the climate change conference in Copenhagen in December must include ocean issues in its agenda.

The World Ocean Conference (WOC) and the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit scheduled in Manador, North Sulawesi, on May 11-15, 2009 are important events for talks on ocean issues, the foreign minister said here on Saturday.

He said it was a fact that countries sill paid less attention to the ocean and environment conditions casing huge losses to man and state because ocean was rich in marine resources which provided life for mankind.

The minister said that there were even countries and institutions in the world which had not yet placed ocean issues as an important and strategic issue in reducing global warming.

He said that the impact of global warming also did not receive proper attention and special discussions even in the united Nations Framework convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bali in December 2007 and in UNFCCC in Poland in December 2008.

Minister Hassan Wirajuda was here on Saturday to inspect a number of infrastructure facilities built to support the implementation of the World Ocean Conference (WOC).

Manado will also host an International Symposium on Ocean Science, Technology and Policy, on May 12-14, a Global Ocean Policy Day on May 13, and an International Ocean Science, Technology and Industry Exhibition, May 11-15, coinciding with the WOC.

Peninsula Hotel which is located in the heart of the city, will also host several side events to be organized coinciding with the WOC (May 11-14) and the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit on May 15.

The minister reminded the organizers to serve delegates participating in the events well.

The minister hoped that the WOC in Manado would also encourage other regions to hold international events for the promotion of the regional tourism.***
