PRESIDENT ASKS BUDDHISTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO NATION`S GLORY
Borobudur, Indonesia, May 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono attended the commemoration of the Wesak Day here on Saturday, calling on the country's Buddhists to use the day as a momentum to contribute to the nation's glory.
"I call on all Buddhists to make the Wesak Day a momentum to develop the nation's noble values of tolerance, moderation and pluralism," he said.
The event was also attended by religious affairs minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni, minister of culture and tourism Jero Wacik, Central Java governor Bibit Waluyo and Magelang district head Singgin Sanyoto.
Yudhoyono said he hoped the Wesak Day to mark Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death would bring spiritUal enlightenment to all Buddhists so that they could make good deeds and improve their care for others.
He said the commemoration would certainly also become a momentum for the Buddhists to contemplate again the teachings of Buddha.
The president said the life of the nation and the state also was based on the nation's various noble values of love and respect to others and tolerance.
He said various universal values from Buddha had also played a very important role with regard to building advanced, respectful and welfare nation.
"It needs struggle and sacrifice in order to pass various tests, as has been shown by Buddha Gautama, for it" he said. ***
