BIO FARMA READY TO PRODUCE SWINE FLU VACCINES
Jakarta, May 11 (ANTARA) - PT Bio Farma said it was ready to develop swine flu (H1N1) vaccines after the government had assigned it to produce it, the company's president director said.
"Bio Farma has already obtained samples of the Mexican strain of virus for the production on a small scale of the vaccines from the World Health Organization," Bio Farma president director Isa Mansyur said here on on Monday.
He said the production of swine flu vaccines would be carried out in line with the production of bird flu (H5N1) vaccines which had been developed previously.
Mansyur said that at present Bio Farma is developing bird flu vaccines, particularly for seasonal bird flu.
He said that in the development of bird flu vaccines his company has obtained virus samples from the WHO through the National Institute for Biological Standardization of Britain.
Mansyur said that for the beginning, the development of the bird flu vaccines was carried out with high quality chicken eggs to produce measles vaccines.
He said that the technology facility used in the production of flu vaccines for human was just the same as that for bird flu where the type of its virus development could be changed.
The Bio Farma director said his side in the development of the bird flu vaccines cooperated with groups of academicians, businesses and government officials.
"We have to cooperate with the three groups so that we could produce the maximal vaccine development results," he said.
He said that for the development of bird flu vaccines Bio Farma obtained funds from the government amounting to Rp700 billion for the 2008 budget year.
"For the vaccine development, we need a two-year period to start the project beginning from clinical tests to see whether it could generate anti body or not, until the issuance of a recommendation from the Food and Drug Supervision Agency (BPOM)," he said.
