COMMUNICATIONS PARALYZED DUE TO TELKOM'S DISRUPTED OPTIC FIBER

Medan, May 11 (ANTARA) - The telecommunications system in North Sumatra had been paralyzed for almost nine hours since 1 p.m local time due to disrupted optic fibre in the Pekanbaru-Rengat network under the Pekanbaru-Batam system.
"Telkom (state telecommunications company) asked for an apology, because of the disruption contacts to the southern parts of Sumatra and some other cities were also cut off, including fixed telephones, Internet, Flexi, data communication, and other services," kata Executive General Manager of Telkom Sumatra Muhammad Awaluddin said in Medan Monday.

Since the disruption occurred, Telkom has been trying to correct the condition by shifting some of the traffic via satellite and digital radio transmission.

Consequently, he said, only 10 percent of the Internet traffic could be handled because in terms of bandwidth, the capacity of handling traffic via satellite and radio transmission is much lower than the optic fiber.

Telkom hoped all the services would be restored before midnight local time.
