WOC : 16 PHILIPPINE ACTIVISTS DEPORTED

Manado, May 12 (ANTARA) - Sixteen Philippine activists and members of the Manado Alliance had been deported in Tuesday's small hours for attending an illegal activity although some of them were official participants to the World Ocean Conference (WOC) and the CTI summit.

The Manado Alliance in a press release issued in Manado on Tuesday said that the activists are grouped in SEAFISH, an important network in the civil society which has been very outspoken in speaking against injustice upon traditional fishermen in Southeast Asia.
The Manado Alliance said the deportation of the activists was proof of the silencing of the voice of traditional fishermen by the WOC and CTI organizers.

The Philippine activists in the company of the Philippine Consul General were on Monday at 5 p.m. taken to the North Sulawesi immigration office after taking part in an activity of the Manado Alliance in the Malalang beach.

At the immigration office the activists were forced to admit that they took part in the illegal forum, but they denied the allegation.

"We are so confused because the immigration personnel cannot tell us what wrong had we done and why will we be deported.Besides, there was no deportation order from the Indonesian government. They even took our tickets and rescheduled our departure tickets. This deportation has no valid reason. We protest the Indonesian government," Ted Jasinto of SEAFISH said after the questioning.

The six Philippine activists were Jun Germise,Pepe Tanchuling, Magda, Roming Dinna Umengan, Bebeb, Mercy Cepe, Pablo Rogales, K. Bal, Ted Jasinto, Glenn, K Noli. Nasser Halipa, Daniel,Vay Vibal, and Doned Canada.

They are fighting for traditional fishermen's rights to access and control of marine and coastal resources.

SEAFISH's members include non-governmental organizations and fishermen's organizations in Southeast Asia like Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.***3***
