DEVELOPMENT PLANNERS MUST UNDERSTAND REGIONAL PROBLEMS : PRESIDENT

Jakarta, May 12 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said development planners must understand the problems faced by the regions so that the development programs they draw up will be what the people in the regions concerned really need.

The president made the remark when he opened a national working meeting of National Development Planners at the Bumi Karsa hotel here on Tuesday.

Yudhoyono explained that regional conditions and situations continued to undergo changes so that a comprehensive understanding of the matter was badly needed for planners to know what must be done in planning national development.

"If we understand the problems we are facing we will be able to adjust our programs and action plans to the real conditions so that we can achieve the best results," the head of state said.

He said the theme taken up for the 2009 national working meeting was already right.

The results of the meeting should be included in the government's work plans and the central and regional budgets for 2009. The meeting's theme was "National Economic Recovery and Maintaining the People's Prosperity."
"The theme is realistic and right," President Yudhoyono said.

He explained that the international, regional and domestic economic situations should become the basis for the implementation of national development programs. He stressed the importance of sustainable development programs.

"State leaders may come and go but national development plans and programs must stay and be kept running so that developmental achievements will not experience fluctuations," he said.

At the end of his address the president left three messages that should be heeded, namely keeping up seven priorities in the face of crisis, continuing the government's work plan, central and regional budgets and increasing the managerial capacity and leadership in the region in order to ensure the proper implementation of development plans.
