PRESIDENT SAYS HIS RELATIONS WITH JK REMAIN GOOD

Jakarta, May 12 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said his relations with Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) have remained good although they would compete in the upcoming presidential race.

"We will compete in the upcoming presidential polls but we will maintain our cordial relations and will continue our common tasks until the end of our presidential and vice presidential terms," the president said here on Tuesday.

He said the period of five years in government with Kalla was full of memories and to him it would remain a memorable period in his life. "My relations with Pak (Mr) JK will never break off. So, there is no need to worry about. Politics is really hard but our hearts remain in touch," the president said to the applause of hundreds of participants of a national working meeting of National Development Planners.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla was also present at the function. The meeting between Yudhoyono and Kalla at the function was the first since it became clear they would become political rivals.

Since their political partnership had ended, both leaders have exchanged barbs about their respective capabilities in running the government over the past 4.5 years.

Recently, Kalla who has been declared the presidential candidate of the Golkar Party who would run together with Wiranto, chairman of the People's Conscience Party, said he could move faster and be better in running the government.

On another occasion, Yudhoyono for his part called on presidential candidates not to boast and feel they were better than others.

At Tuesday's national development planners' meeting, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said development planners must understand the problems faced by the regions so that the development programs they draw up will be what the people in the regions concerned really need.

Yudhoyono explained that regional conditions and situations continued to undergo changes so that a comprehensive understanding of the matter was badly needed for planners to know what must be done in planning national development.***1***
