SOFTWARE PIRACY IN RI ROSE TO 85 PCT IN 2008
Jakarta, May 12 (ANTARA) - The software piracy rate in Indonesia rose to 85 percent in 2008 causing an estimated loss of US$544 million, a software business spokesman said.
"What is now urgently needed is the assured existence of cooperation between the relevant authorities and intellectual property owners to provide more adequate protection of software copy rights." Donny A Sheyaputra, a spokesman of the Software Business Alliance (BSA), said here Tuesday.
He said a study conducted for BSA on software piracy in the world had shown that after going down over the previous two years, the rate of piracy of personal computer (PC) software in Indonesia had risen by one point to 85 percent in 2008.
The study was done by IDC (International Data Corporation), an institute engaged in research and analyses of information technology markets.
According to the study, the losses caused by the software piracy in 2008 reached US$ 544 million or 32 percent up from the losses in 2007.
In 2008, the PC software piracy rate in 57 of the 110 countries covered by IDC's study had dropped and it had increased only in 16 countries whereas in the remainder of the countries it had remained the same.
But for the second time in a row the overall software piracy rate in the world had risen from 38 percent to 41 percent, he said.
"This is because of the growth in the transportation of PCs in countries with high piracy rates such as China and India which offset the progress made in those and other countries, and the same happened in Indonesia," he said.
The dispatch of PCs to consumers in 2008 had doubled compared to the preceding year."This means the results of anti piracy efforts by the Intellectual Property Rights Task Force at the level of corporate users have been negated by an increase in piracy in the general consumer market." he added.***2***
