OBSERVER: YUDHOYONO'S INTENTION TO PICK BOEDIONO COURAGEOUS

Jakarta, May 13 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would have taken a courageous step if he really picked Central Bank Governor Boediono as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election, an observsr said.

Political observer from Paramadina University, Bima Arya Sugiarto, said here on Wednesday Yudhoyono's reported intention to pick Boediono was a courageous one because the central bank governor did not have any experience in politics.

According to Bima Arya, Yudhoyono and his Democratic Party (PD) would have to work hard if Yudhoyono stuck to his plan to name Boediono as his running mate because the latter was not a favorite figure to pair with the former.

Arya said if Boediono was really named as Yudhoyono's running mate, the success team of the Domocratic Party should take swift action to convince the public about the decision.

He added that the Democratic Party's success team should also explain it rationally to other political parties which were previously ready to coalesce with PD.

Yudhoyono's special envoy Hatta Radjasa who is also minister/state secretary said here on Tuesday that he had already met with leaders of the parties that would coalesce with PD and asked them to support Yudhoyono's choice.

"I think a long and objective process has been taken and therefore we will refer the decision to Yudhoyono. It is him who knows best who he considers meets the criteria set earlier. In view of that we need to give support," Hatta Radjasa said.

He said chiefs of parties that would coalesce with the Democratic Party namely Suryadharma Ali from the United Development Party (PPP), Muhaimin Iskandar from the National Awakening Party (PKB) and Zulkifli Hasan, the secretary general of the National Mandate Party (PAN) were invited to the State Building Tuesday evening.

He said the leader of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) which also planned to coalese with the Democratic Party had also been invited but did not come to the meeting.

Hatta said that he had continued communicating with the general chairperson of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri.

He said he hoped the meeting between Megawati and Yudhoyono could happen soon or before the Yudhoyono-Boediono ticket was declared on May 15.

Meanwhile, the political observer from Paramadina University opined that Yudhoyono's reason to pick Boediono as his running mate was because the latter had high loyalty and international acceptability. ***
