PDIP CONTINUES SUPPORTING MEGAWATI FOR PRESIDENT
Jakarta, May 13 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDIP) will remain supporting the nomination of its chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri as presidential candidate for the upcoming election, a spokesman said.
"Although we want to meet with the leaders of other political parties for coalition purposes, our option is that Megawati will remain our presidential candidate," chairman of the PDIP faction in the House of Representatives Tjahjo Kumolo said at Megawati's residence on Teuku Umar street here on Wednesday.
Commenting on PDIP's support for Megawati as the party's presidential candidate, Kumolo said the party was solid in this regard.
Asked about the possibility of a coalition between PDIP and the Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, Kumolo said communication between the two political parties remained good.
"We will continue to build communication with Gerindra to maintain a ecommon vision and perception," Kumolo said before attending a PDIP internal meeting.
Meanwhile, political observer from Paramadina University Budi Arya Sugiarto said on a separate occasoin here on Wednesday that the idea of a coalition between PDIP and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party (PD) would be hard to realize.
"It will take a long time for PDIP and PD to build a coalition while the registration time for presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs is limited," he said here on Wednesday.
He said to coalesce, the two political parties should try to overcome their differences during President Yudhoyono's government.
The differences, according to Arya, were among other things about the government's policy on domestic fuel oil price hikes and the distribution of direct cash assistance (BLT) which were strongly criticized by PDIP.
Arya said if the Democratic Party coalesced with PDIP, it would be opposed and not be supported by PDIP constituents at the grass root level
"A coalition between the two parties will lead to dissension among PDIP supporters at grass root level," Arya said. ***
