OBSERVER : PDIP-PD COALITION HARD TO REALIZE

Jakarta, May 13 (ANTARA) - The idea of a coalition between the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party (PD) will be hard to realize, an observer said.

"It will take a long time for PDI-P and PD to build a coalition while the registration time for presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs is limited," political observer from Paramadina University Budi Arya Sugiarto said here on Wednesday.

He said to coalesce, the two political parties should try to overcome their differences during President Yudhoyono's government.

The differences, according to Arya, were among other things about the government's policy on domestic fuel oil price hikes and the distribution of direct cash assistance (BLT) which were strongly criticized by PDIP.

Arya said if the Democratic Party coalesced with PDIP, it would be opposed and not be supported by PDIP constituents at the grass root level
"A coalition between the two parties will lead to dissension among PDIP supporters at grass root level," Arya said.

Asked about President Yudhoyono's intention to name Central Bank Governor Boediono as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election, Arya said it was a courageous step because Boediono did not have any experience in politics.

According to Bima Arya, Yudhoyono and his Democratic Party (PD) would have to work hard if Yudhoyono stuck to his plan to name Boediono as his running mate because the latter was not a favorite figure to pair with the former.

Arya said if Boediono was really named as Yudhoyono's running mate, the success team of the Domocratic Party should take swift action to convince the public about the decision.

He added that the Democratic Party's success team should also explain it rationally to other political parties which were previously ready to coalesce with PD.

Yudhoyono's special envoy Hatta Radjasa who is also minister/state secretary said here on Tuesday that he had already met with leaders of the parties that would coalesce with PD and asked them to support Yudhoyono's choice.

Hatta Radjasa said chiefs of parties that would coalesce with the Democratic Party namely Suryadharma Ali from the United Development Party (PPP), Muhaimin Iskandar from the National Awakening Party (PKB) and Zulkifli Hasan, the secretary general of the National Mandate Party (PAN) were invited to the State Building Tuesday evening.

Hatta said that he had continued communicating with the general chairperson of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri.

He said he hoped the meeting between Megawati and Yudhoyono could happen soon or before the Yudhoyono-Boediono ticket was declared on May 15. ***
