GOLKAR-HANURA COALITION STILL OPEN TO OTHER PARTIES : SPOKESMAN

Jakarta, May 13 (ANTARA) - The Golkar-People's Conscience (Hanura) coalition in support of Jusuf Kalla and Wiranto for president and vice president is still open for other political parties wishing to join it, a spokesman said.

"Certainly, the door of our coalition is still open for other political parties that wish to join us," JK-Wiranto pair spokesman Indra J Piliang said here on Wednesday.

Indra said every political party including Golkar and Hanura wanted to have as many partners as possible in their coalitions to support its presidential and vice presidential candidates for the upcoming election.

"In the present political situation, one rival is best faced with the support of a thousand friends," the former political observer from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said.

According to Indra, the doors of the Golkar-Hanura coalition were wide open to all political parties, including the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), National Mandate Party (PAN), United Development Party (PPP), and National Awakening Party (PKB).

The last four parties previously had planned to coalesce with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party (PD) as the winner of the April 9 legislative election but they have now changed their mind as Yudhoyono is reported to have decided to pick Central Bank Governor Boediono as his running mate in the upcoming presidential election.

Commenting on the grand coalition among Golkar, Hanura, Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, and Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDIP), Indra said the alliance was formed as the basis for their relations in parliament.

Consequently, Indra expressed hope that the PDIP and Gerindra would also nominate their best cadres to run in the July 8 presidential election.

"We hope Megawati Soekarnoputri of PDIP and Prabowo Subianto of Gerindra will run in the upcoming presidential election," Indra said, adding that if all of the country's best leaders contested the election, it would be difficult to predict who would emerge as the next president and vice president.***
