PD TO DECLARE CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENTIAL RACE FRIDAY
Jakarta, May 15 (ANTARA) - The Democratic Party (PD) is slated to announce its presidential and vice presidential candidates for the July 8 election in Bandung on Friday evening.
At a function scheduled to start at 6 in the evening, PD presidential aspirant Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would also name the a figure who will be his running mate.
In the last few days, Central Bank Governor Boediono has been widely believed to have been chosen by Yudhoyono to be his deputy when he is reelected in the upcoming polls.
Yudhoyono is expected to arrive at Halim Perdanakusuma airport at 1.30 on Friday afternoon from Manado, after completing his three-day working visit in the North Sulawesi provincial city to open World Ocean Conference (WOC) and Corral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit.
Meanwhile, head of the Democratic Party's human resources development section, Andi Malarangeng, said in Manado before leaving for Jakarta on Friday that Yudhoyono intended to give the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) a personal explanation about his decision to choose Boediono as his running mate.
"It seems that PKS cadres want an explanation about the matter from Yudhoyono himself and hopefully he will meet PKS leaders later today," Malarangeng, said.
Malarangeng did not mention the exact time of Yudhoyono's meeting with the PKS leaders, saying only it could take place on Friday afternoon in Jakarta after Yudhoyono had returned from Manado.
Malarangeng said Yudhoyono's special representatives consisting of PD chairman Hadi Utomo, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, and State Secretary Hatta Rajasa on Thursday met with PKS leader Tifatul Sembiring and the party's secretary general, Anis Matta, in Jakarta.
"If PKS really needs an explanation from Yudhoyono, he can give it. And we hope that with the explanation the problem between PKS and Yudhoyono can be overcome, and the declaration in Bandung can take place as scheduled," Malarangeng said.
He said an explanation about Yudhoyono's decision to choose Boediono as his running mate was actually already given to the PKS leadership by phone as Yudhoyono was unable to meet PKS leaders personally because of his tight schedule as president.
Malarangeng said the Democartic Party had also sent an official invitation to the PKS leadership to attend the function in Bandung where the Democratic Party would officially declare its presidential and vice presidential candidates on Friday night.***
