YOUTH AND SPORTS MINISTRY TO BE STRENGTHENED
MELAKA (Malaysia), May 16 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry will be
strengthened in terms of its manpower and finance in efforts to ensure
effectiveness of activities implemented for youths nationwide.
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the move was important in view
of the large number of youths in the country who were involved in various
fields.
"If we want the youths to be effective, government agencies and bodies such
as those under the Ministry of Youth and Sports must be further strengthened so
that youth programmes could be activated in a more effective manner throughout
the country," he told reporters after opening the National Youth Day Gathering
2009 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) Ayer Keroh, in this
southern city Friday.
The gathering, attended by about 15,000 youths, was also attended by Youth
and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek and southern state of Melaka Chief
Minister Mohd Ali Rustam.
Muhyiddin said Prime Minister Najib Razak had agreed in principle on the
move to strengthen the ministry and youth bodies and discussions to find the
best approach in realising this objective would be held.
On the 1Youth 1Malaysia concept, Muhyiddin said it was an idea mooted by the
leadership at the Youth and Sports Ministry as well as youth leaders to be
together with the national leadership under the 1Malaysia concept.
"It stresses the important relationship between the youths and national
leadership as well as the government while the 1Youth 1Malaysia stresses on
cooperation, solidarity among the youths which we know is important in our
country," he said.
Earlier in his speech at the gathering, Muhyiddin said the government hoped
that the youths could carry out their responsibility to preserve unity instead
of merely leaving it to the government or certain parties only.
He said that in discharging this responsibility, they should give priority
to social and national interests and be able to think and act rationally and
governed by noble religious values.
He also suggested that a smart partnership be created between the youths and
various communities, the private sector, media, non-governmental organisations
and other government agencies to further strengthen the youth movement.
