MEGAWATI WARNS KPU NOT TO REPEAT PAST MISTAKES

Jakarta, May 16 (ANTARA) - Presidential hopeful Megawati Soekarnoputri warned the General Election Commission (KPU) not to repeat the mistakes that happened in the recent legislative election in the upcoming presidential election.

To avoid the similar mistake from happening again in the July 8 presidential election, Megawati said the KPU should learn from its past experience in the legislative election.

"The undesired things that have happened in the legislative election should not recur in the July presidential election," the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) chairperson said in her brief statement before registering at the KPU office here on Saturday.

On the occasion Megawati expressed hope that the presidential election could proceed fairly, freely, directly, and secretly.

Megawati and her running mate Prabowo Subianto came to KPU office at 1 pm on Saturday to register in the company of PDIP Secretary General Pramono Anung, Megawati's daughter Puan Maharani, Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) chairman Suhardi, its secretary general Ahmad Muzani, PNI Marhaenism Party chairman Sukmawati Soekarnoputri, Guruh Soekarnoputra, and Labor Party chairman Muchtar Pakpahan.

After the registration, KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshari said whatever the Commission did would not be optimal unless it was supported by all parties.

"We need support and cooperation from all parties because unwanted things tend to happen in the field," Anshari said, demanding support and prayers that the July election could run successfully.

"We are certain that the candidates to be elected as the next president and vice president are the best figures for the state and nation," he added.***
