AL WASIL ELIMINATED FROM ASIA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Jakarta, May 16 (ANTARA) - The Al Wasil basketball team from the United Arab Emirates in Group B was eliminated during qualifying round on the fifth day of the 20th FIBA Asian Championship Cup here on Saturday.

Al Wasil was ranked fifth out of five teams in the group recording only one win in four matches it had played until the fifth day of the championship.

The average number of goals made by the team from the Middle East was also the lowest in the group namely 0.889, following Young Cagers from India (0.970), Satria Muda from Indonesia (1.030), Al Arabi from Qatar (1.159) and Zain from Jordan (1.323).

Al Wasil will still play against Qadsia from Kuwait in Group A on Tuesday but the results of the game would not make the two teams able to go to quarter finals.

"The match will only make them ranked ninth or tenth," one of the committee members, Bonanza, said.

Teams that will compete in the quarter finals will be determined by results of matches on Sunday.

That day Zain, Group B's number one, will meet with Sangmoo of Korea which is ranked fourth in Group A. Mahram from Iran which is ranked first in Group A meanwhile will play against Young Cagers from India which is ranked fourth in Group B.

On Sunday Al Riyadi from Lebanon which is the second place in Group A will also play against Satria Muda from Indonesia which is in the third place in Group B. Al Arabi from Qatar which is in the second place in Group B will meet with Smart Gilas from the Philippines which is in the third place in Group A.

"The results of the matches will determine the teams to meet in the quarterfinals. The loser will meet the loser and the winner will meet the winner on Tuesday.
