HOUSE SPEAKER REMINDS PRESIDENT TO PROPOSE BOEDIONO`S SUCCESSOR SOON

Jakarta, May 18 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung laksono said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono should soon propose somebody to fill the post of Bank Indonesia (BI) governor after Boediono had officially become candidate for vice president.

Speakng to the press here Monday, Laksono said the BI governrship was a strategic post and should not be left vacant too long after Boediono had relinquished it.

"The post of BI governor must be filled soon because the person holding it co-determines the central government's economic policies," he said.

Therefore, he said, the government must soon forward the name of the person it was proposing to replace Boediono who had officially become Yudhoyono's running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

He said a prolonged vacuum in the BI's leadership would profoundly affect domestic economic developments.

Asked who, in his view, would deserve to be appointed the new BI governor, Laksono said the DPR was not in a position to nominate someone for the post as its authority was limited to conducting fit-and-proper tests on candidates.

"The DPR's brief is only to examine candidates forwarded by the president," Laksono said, adding the candidates could be either BI career officials or persons from outside BI.
About when the right time was for submitting the names of candidates for BI governor to the House, Laksonos said "the sooner, the better."
"If possible, the names should be sent to us this month of May so that the position does not remain vacant too long," he said. ***
