GOVT PREPARING THREE STEPS TO OVERCOME POWER CRISIS
Jakarta, May 18 (ANTARA) - The government through state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) is preparing three steps to deal with rising demand for electrical power in the country, a minister said.
The three steps were expediting the construction of power plants, developing transmission and distribution networks and implementing customer side programs, State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil said in a statement at a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI here on Monday.
The House questioned the capability of the company to deal with power shortages in the next 10 years amid rising demand for electrical power.
Demand for electrical power in the next 10 years is expected to grow 9.69 percent, while in 2008 PLN's power plants had an installed capacity of 29.2 gigawatts (GW) and power needs during the peak load reached 21.4 GW.
In the short run, the minister said, PLN would launch two programs to deal with power shortages in a number of areas outside Java and Bali by hiring generators and relocating generators from well-electrified areas to power-deficit areas.
The long-term program meanwhile included accelerating the construction of the first phase of 10,000 MW-capacity power plants and continuing the construction of the second phase of 10,000 MW-capacity power plants, he said.
"This program includes the construction of coal-fired power plants, geothermal power plants and hydro power plants," he said.
He said in the next 10 years the government would build 44,257-km-long transmission networks and 175,013 km-long distribution networks.
In the customer side program, the government would regulate new connections and encourage the realization of demand side management (DSM) program and power retrenchment program, he said. ***2***
