FORESTRY MINISTRY LAUNCHES 'ONE MAN, ONE TREE' PLANTING PROGRAM
Jakarta, May 18 (ANTARA) - The forestry ministry has launched a 'One Man, One Tree' Program to deal with the impact of climate change and to preserve forests.
Trees could absorb CO2 emissions which have triggered the climate change and the global warming, a press statement of the forestry ministry said here on Monday.
Under the HTI program, the ministry has planted 4.2 million trees, out of the five million target this year. Under the 'Gerhan' program, 3.7 million trees, were planted out of the five million target in 2009.
Up to May 2009, some 1.7 million trees have been planted, of the two million trees targeted this year through the People's Forest Intensification and Expansion Program.
The forestry ministry also planned to plant a total of 5.4 million trees under the People's Forest Development Program until the year 2015.
Under the Community Forestry Program, around 2.1 million trees are expected to be planted by 2015.
The forestry ministry has also managed to slow down the deforestation rate from 2.83 million hectares per year in 1999-2000 to 1.08 million hectare per year in 2000-2006, the press statement said.
The ministry also cut the critical or degraded land rate from 59.3 million hectares in 2005 to 30 million hectares after 2005.
Illegal logging and illegal log trade cases were reduced from 9,600 cases in 2004 to 300 cases in 2008, while the number of forest fire hot spots were cut from 121,622 hot spots in 2006 to 27,247 in 2007.
Up to November 11, 2008, there were only 17,020 hot spots were detected, according to the ministry's statement. The number of hot spots in 2007 was down 78 percent from those in 2006, and further down 86 percent in 2008.
Some 86.9 million trees were simultaneously planted a nation-wide tree planting program in 2007, and 109 million trees in 2008.
The Women's Movement of Tree Planting and Caring program managed to plant 14.01 million trees in 2007 and 5,083,467 million trees in 2008.
A total of 700 million trees were planted in cooperation with various mass organizations, it said.
The Indonesian government has planned to plant 230 million trees this year. ***3***
