THIRTEEN ILLEGAL AFGHAN MIGRANTS DETAINED BY BAKAUHENI POLICE
Bandarlampung, May 18 (ANTARA) - Police at Lampung province's Bakauheni seaport have detained 13 Afghan people who were traveling without passports and other official documents, a local immigration official said.
"The illegal immigrants were nabbed by police at Bakauheni seaport on Saturday (May 16) when they were about to leave for Jakarta. The police then brought them to us," head of the Panjang seaport immigration office, Eddi Haryadi, said on Monday.
Haryadi said, eight of the 13 illegal immigrants were children aged between three months and 15 years.
"They entered Indonesia through Tanjung Balai seaport, North Sumatra, then rented a car to continue their journey hoping to reach the IOM (International Organization of Migration) representative office in Jakarta. But they were stopped when they wanted to cross the Sunda Srait (by ferry) from Bakauheni seaport," he said.
The aliens, Haryadi said, came from Malaysia which they entered legally and where stayed for about two months, and when their stay permits expired, they decided to leave for Australia via Indonesia under the protection of IOM.
"Please note that we, the immigration office here, only temporarily held them while waiting for the IOM's response," he said, adding that immigration office in Panjang seaport had contacted the IOM office in Bandarlampung in an effort to bring the 13 immigrants to the IOM head office in Jakarta.
It was the second nab of Afghanistan immigrants that occurred here in the last three months, after some 24 Afghan illegal immigrants (without passports, visas and other documents) who wished to go to Australia, were detained in the Lampung Selatan area, Haryadi added. ***4***
