LG Display develops slimmest flat panel for TVs
SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korean flat-screen maker LG Display Co. said
Tuesday it has developed the world's thinnest liquid crystal display (LCD) for
use in TVs.
The LCD panel is 5.9 mm thick with the display for 42-inch TVs weighing 6.1 kg,
the company said, adding it uses light-emitting diodes (LED) to illuminate the
display.
LEDs are known to have many advantages to traditional light sources, including
low energy consumption, longer lifetime and a smaller size. They are increasingly
used as backlights for slimmer TVs.
LG Display, the world's second-largest flat panel maker, did not reveal when it
will begin to mass produce the new panel.
