BOEDIONO TO CONTINUE WATCHING OVER BI
Jakarta, May 19 (ANTARA) - Boediono, the outgoing Bank Indonesia governor, said here on Tuesday he would continue to watch over the central bank's performance after his appointment as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's running mate.
"In my capacity as a citizen and later if people give a mandate to pak (Mr) SBY (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) as president again with me as vice president, I will continue watch over BI so that it will remain an effective and independent institution that contributes maximally to the management of our economy," he said at a press conference held in connection with his resignation as BI governor.
At the press conference Boediono was flanked BI senior deputy governor Miranda S Goeltom and three BI deputy governors Mulyaman D Hadad, Hartadi A Sarwono and Budi Mulya.
He said Bank Indonesia was now in good condition and responsive to the economic challenges as it already had well established work system.
Therefore, he said, he was not worried about leaving his job at the bank. "I feel, I can leave the institution with a good feeling meaning that the institution is running very well and decision-making process is already well-established. I hope during a vacuum (as the new governor is not yet named) there will be no problem as rules are already very clearly stipulated in the law," he said.
He said he thanked all deputy governors that had become his partners in making decisions and also all employees that had supported his leadership in the bank.
Regarding his nomination as a vice presidential candidate he said that it was a call of duty. "It is hard for me to leave the office that has filled my life so far and particularly for the past one year. However a call of duty seems to have made me conclude that I had to leave the insitution," he said.
Boediono said he had submitted his resignation as a BI governor to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. "Like what Ibu (Mrs) Miranda said to avoid possible conflict of interest and to maintain BI's independence I had offered my resignation which was effective as of the date I registered with the General Elections Commission as a running mate of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono," he said.
