S KOREA OFFERS TO INVEST US$780 MILLION IN SABANG PORT PROJECT

Jakarta, May 19 (ANTARA) - A South Korean investor is offering an investment of US$780 million for the phase I construction of Sabang port in Aceh, a spokesman said.

"The Korean investor intends to build the first phase of Sabang port with an investment of US$780 million," a deputy for industrial and trade affairs of the chief economic minister, Eddy Putra Irawadi said here on Tuesday.

Besides the Korean investor, an investor from Dublin, Ireland, also expressed intention to invest in the development of infrastructure in Sabang, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.

"Many investors from South Korea and Dublin have been waiting for the chance and have come to US to express their intention to invest in Sabang," he said.

The two investors were interested in making investment in the development of logistics system and properties such as crude bunkers, transmission networks and ports.

With a fund of that large, Sabang could have a port which was larger than that of Batam. "The Batam port only needed US$470 million to construct its first phase," Irawadi said.

However, the realization of such investment in Sabang still faced a problem because the organization structure of the Sabang Development Authority (BPKS) had not yet been completed.

Besides, a government regulation on the assignment of Sabang as a free trade and free port area had not yet been completed.

He said that actually the concept of the government regulation had been finished. What now had to be done was that the Aceh governor should submit the draft to the home affair minister and should have consultation with him on the matter.

"The draft regulation has been actually finished. It has been deliberated for six times and has been finalized. But administrative process still has to be completed and submitted to the minister," he said.
