INDONESIA'S FIRST QUARTER BALANCE OF PAYMENTS BOOKS US$4 B SURPLUS

Jakarta, May 19 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia, the central bank, booked a surplus of four billion US dollars in Indonesia's balance of payments in the first quarter of 2009.

"The performance of Indonesia's balance of payments in the first quarter of 2009 had improved significantly by booking a surplus of four billion US dollars, following a heavy deficit pressure in last year's fourth quarter," a BI report on the development of Indonesia's balance of payments said Tuesday.

BI said that the improvements took place not only in current transactions but in capital and financial transactions as well. The current transactions in the first quarter of this year reached a surplus of 1.8 billion US dollars, up compared to that in last year's fourth quarter with a deficit of 0.7 billion US dollars.

"The improved current transactions were supported by the increase in surplus in the non-oil/gas balance of trade, and the declining deficit in the oil and services balance of trade. Increase in the non-oil/gas balance of payment surplus took place as the non-oil/bas imports had decline sharper than non-oil/gas exports," the BI report said.
