MEGAWATI TO BOOST ECONOMIC GROWTH TO TWO-DIGIT FIGURE
Jakarta, May 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDIP) presidential aspirant Megawati Soekarnoputri said that the country's economic growth could be booted to two digits in the coming four years.
"We believe that if all programs can be carried out, a two digit economic growth in the coming four years is not something impossible," Megawati said after attending a dialog with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Indusries (Kadin) here on Friday.
She said Indonesia would face a critical condition in the coming four months because economic and political problems would arise at the same time.
On the occasion, Prabowo Subianto who is Megawati's running mate in the upcoming July 8, 2009 presidential race said that the two-digit economic growth would be achieved in the fourth year if they were elected in the polls.
"I think the double-digit economic growth figure will be reached after we have arrived in the fourth year," he added.
He said the focus of the economic policies of a Megawati-Prabwowo administration would be on sustainable development of the agricultural and energy sectors.
"Our problem is how to stop the leakages of national wealth to foreign countries which are caused by the present system where loans are used to pay debts," he said.
Prabowo was convinced that the pro-people economic concept would be able to boost Indonesia's growth to the targeted level.
In the meantime, the Democratic Party's presidential hopeful Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told Kandin on Wednesday that, if elected, he would boost the Indonesian economy to grow at a rate of seven percent at the end of 2014.
Yudhoyono made the promise when presenting his vision and mission at a presidential candidates gathering organized by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at the Jakarta Theater Ballroom here on Wednesday.
The figure promised by Yudhoyono was one percent lower than that mentioned by his rival, Jusuf Kalla, who at a similar forum on Monday said economic growth would reach eight percent if he was elected.***2***
