ILLEGAL MIGRANTS' COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN MUST ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE
Jakarta, May 22 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is asking the countries of origin of illegal migrants to also take responsibility for their fate, Deputy Foreign Minister Triyono Wibowo said here on Friday.
"We will discuss the problem of illegal migrants from Rohingya, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China or others at a meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, on JUne 3, 2009," he said.
He said after attending a meeting on security, political and law affairs that the meeting would also seek the best way of solving the problem as well as other problems including human trafficking.
"We will find the best solution at a regional level," he said.
He said the solution of the problems was the responsibility of the countries of origin, of transit and destination and "therefore we must meet and talk to settle it."
The director general of immigration, Basyir Ahmad Barmawi, meanwhile said that Indonesia would strengthen cooperation among ministries concerned to overcome the problem.
"We will optimize cooperation and coordination among the ministries and offices concerned as well as cooperation and coordination with other countries," he said.
In the third Bali Regional Ministerial Conference (BRMC) or the Bali Process several measures had been discussed to overcome illegal immigrant and human trafficking problems especially for Indonesia as a country often being used as a transit place.
"A lot of illegal immigrants have indeed been unveiled in the country. In Jakarta 19 illegal immigrants were seized recently," Basyir said.
He said he could not tell their exact number in 2008 but they came from various countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh and Afhanistan.
The case emerged because situation in their countries of origin was not secure, he said. "They wish to seek a better life in other countries," he added.
Basyir said illegal immigrants usually entered Indonesia through Malaysia which offers free-visa facilities. He admitted they could enter Indonesia because there were a lot of illegal entry points in the country.
He also said the problem in Indonesia was worsened by the limited number of immigration officers and immigration check points in the country.
