MEGAWATI ASKS GOVT TO ORGANIZE JULY ELECTION DEMOCRATICALLY

Jakarta, May 23 (ANTARA) - Presidential hopeful from the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri has again reminded the government to organize the presidential election in July in a democratic way.

"When I was president, the election in 2004 ran democratically and this was acknowledged by a number of world leaders," Megawati said in her political oration at a Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party national working meeting here on Saturday.

Therefore, she said, the present government should also be able to hold elections in a democratic manner. However, she had in reality found a lot of shortcomings in the recent legislative elections.

"How elections are held is the responsibility of the national leader, not of the General Elections Commission (KPU), Elections should be organized democratically to be of good quality," Megawati said, referring to the upcoming July presidential election.

According to her, the government should not shirk its responsibility for the abuse-riddled legislative elections recently.

"Indonesia will soon have a presidential election and it should run democratically. The fraudulent practices that have marred the legislative elections cannot be tolerated in the presidential election." Megawati said.

Gerindra held the meeting to firm up its further steps and strategy to ensure the victory of the Megawati-Prabowo pair in the July 8 presidential election.

Meanwhile, Gerindra chairman Suhardi said at the meeting that based on the legislative election in April 2009, many things should be improved in the upcoming presidential election to put the Mega-Prabowo victory on firm basis.

"We tried hard in our great campaign for the past legislative election but the number of votes we got was far from our expectation," Suhardi said.

He added that 4.6 percent of the ballots Gerindra got for the House of Representatives (DPR) was far from what had been expected and therefore the party would make an evaluation and improvement of its performance in the presidential election.

"As a new party, we certainly need to have a training for our cadres to make them more militant, and for our militant observers at ballot stations," he said.

With various improvement measures, Suhardi said Gerindra's political machine would run optimally in supporting a Megawati-Prabowo victory.***
