RI HOUSE SPEAKER SUPPORTS TWO KOREAS` REUNIFICATION
Beijing, May 23 (ANTARA) - Visiting Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said here on Saturday that he supported the reunification of North and South Korea.
Laksono said the support was his effort to reduce the tensions between the two Koreas on the Korean peninsula.
"I fully support the reunification of the two Koreas because the people of the two countries are the same but have different ideologies," Laksono said.
The Indonesian House speaker made the statement during a stopover in Beijing on his way back from North Korea where he had met a number of Pyongyang top officials, including his North Korean counterpart Choe Thae Bok.
Laksono said the heightening tensions on the Korean peninsula could be overcome if the two countries were ready to make reunification efforts.
He said, at his meeting with Choe Thae Bok, he had presented his view that reunification of the two Koreas was the best way to create peace between them.
"I think the two countries have a great opportunity to make reunification efforts, and this is what I said at my meetings with a number of North Korean officials," Laksono said.
He added that Indonesia's and North Korea's parliaments had agreed to step up communication and cooperation which have been well-nurtured so far.
"We have agreed to maintain and to step up our inter-parliamentary cooperation and communication which have been carefully nurtured so far," Laksono said.
He said the two countries' parliaments had agreed to made reciprocal visits in an effort to improve bilateral cooperation and communication.
According to him, his visit in North Korea was part of Indonesia's concern for and attention to the country because it had been under the international spotlight since it launched a satellite recently.
"We hope Indonesia and North Korea will maintain and step up their good relations and cooperations," Laksono said, adding that the cooperation was marked by the visits of a number of Indonesian top officials to North Korea in the recent past.***
