BOEDIONO BIDS FAREWELL TO ALMA MATER
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, May 23 (ANTARA) - Boediono made farewell to his colleagues and students at state Gajahmada University in Yogyakarta on Saturday to embark on a political career as a candidate for vice president.
"Before going into the political field, I had to meet my collegues at UGM (Gajahmada University) to say farewell and ask for their blessings," he said before dozens of lecturers of the university's economics department, the UGM rector, and members of the universiy's board of trustees.
He said by accepting the position of vice presidential candidate along presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono he had entered a new world.
"UGM is part of my life and my friendship with colleagues is extraordinary," he said.
Boediono even wished he could still be allowed to teach at the university later but not as a full-time lecturer with a fixed schedule.
"Teaching is a joy and I will be glad if I can do it again later," he said.
Describing his nomination as a vice presidential candidate he said that it was like a big wave that he had to ride because it was moving towards a worthy destination.
On the occasion, he reiterated that he was not a neo-liberalist as certain people had pictured him to be. "I came from a village university. So, how could I be a neo-liberalist," he said.
He said there was no need to waste energy to discuss this issue, adding it would be better if the energy was used to solve problems.
Boediono hoped his nomination as a vice presidential candidate would contribute something to his alma mater.
The dean of the university's economics department, Marwan Asri, on the occasion expressed his pride because one of his lecturers had been nominated as a vice presidential candidate.
"The pride is unexplainable and we pray his ascension to vice presidency will be smooth," he said.
The university rector, Sudjarwadi, also expressed his pride and happiness for Boediono's nomination as a vice president. On the occasion he extended a bundle of documents from lecturers and essays from students to Boediono.
After giving a farewell lecture and posing for pictures with his students at UGM, Boediono went to the grave of Wahidin Soedirohusodo, a national education figure, to pay his respects.***
