MODERATE QUAKE HITS WEST PAPUA

Bandarlampung, May 24 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern Indonesian province of West Papua early Sunday but there was no immediate report of damage or casualties.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 01.04 a.m. was located 97 km southwest of Manokwari or 211 km northeast of Sorong, both in West Papua, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said on its website.

The quake's depth was 37 km beneath the sea level.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 rocked West Papua on January 4, killing at least four people and injuring tens of others. A series of aftershocks with different intensities occurred since then.
