PEOPLE'S COALITION DECLARES SUPPORT FOR SBY-BOEDIONO PAIR

Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia May 24 (ANTARA) - The People's Coalition which groups 11 social elements in West Nusa Tenggara province held a gathering here Sunday, declaring support for incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's bid for re-election in the July 8 polls.

Some 2,000 people attended the gathering which took place at the Yusuf Abubakar auditorium of the Mataram University here.

Yudhoyono, popularly known as SBY, who has picked economist Boediono as his running mate will vie with incumbent Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) of the Golkar Party and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) for the presidency.

The 11 elements of the community included farmers, youths, street vendors, non-governmental organization activists, informal workers, representatives of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) and members of the association of independent workers.

The coalition's coordinator, Johan Badri, said the people of West Nusa Tenggara had agreed by acclamation to support the SBY-Boediono pair to lead the country for the 2009-2014 period.

"In the 2004 presidential polls, the SBY-JK pair won by majority votes in West Nusa Tenggara. I believe that in the 2009 presidential polls this province will again become a stronghold of the SBY-Boediono pair," he said.
