GERINDRA DENIES PRABOWO ONCE DISMISSED FROM MILITARY SERVICE
Jakarta, May 26 (ANTARA)- A Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party spokesman has categorically denied that the party's top leader, Prabowo Subianto, was a few years ago dismissed from military service.
"Prabowo (a retired army lieutenant general) was discharged honorably from the National Defense Forces (TNI) and therefore
Rizal Mallarangeng's statement (that Prabowo was fired by the military) is unfounded," Gerindra Party vice chairman Fadli Zon said here Tuesday.
Prabowo accepted his discharge from military service because it was a political decision made by the high military command which had to be respected, Fadli Zon said.
"Prabowo's conduct in the line of duty was clean so Rizal Mallarangeng must now clarify his statement made yesterday (Monday)," he said.
Mallarangeng, a spokesman of the campaign team of the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - Boediono presidential and vice presidential ticket said here on Monday, Boediono was never fired from any of the institutions worked for while Probowo, vice presidential candidate of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) and the Gerindra Party, was ever dismissed from the Army.
"Pak Boediono was never dismissed while Pak Prabowo was clearly once fired by the Army," Mallarangeng said.
Prabowo ended his military career with the rank of lieutenant general and the last position he held in the army was chief of the Indonesian Armed Forces Staff and Command School (Sesko) in Bandung. Earlier, he was commnder general of the TNI's Special Force or Kopassus based in Cijantung, East Jakarta.
Meanwhile, one of Prabowo's lawyers, Mahendradatta, said his client had no plan to sue Rizal Mallarengeng for his unfounded statement.
"We think, Rizal's statement was not a criminal act so there is no need for legal action against him," Mahendradatta said, adding Rizal's statement was a sign of the panic an election contender feels about impending defeat.
"So we will only demand a clarification because, once again, Prabowo Subianto was not fired but discharged honorably from the army," Mahendradatta said. ***1***
