GOVT TO BUILD AIRPORT IN MIANGAS ISLAND
Manado, N Sulawesi, May 26 (ANTARA) - The North Sulawesi provincial government will build an airport in Miangas island near the Indonesian-Philippine border at a cost of Rp50 billion.
The fund would be used among others to build infrastructure and other supporting facilities and clear 20 hectares of land for the construction of the airport, North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang said on Tuesday.
The plan to build the airport which would have a runway 1,200 meters long and 30 meters wide was one of the government's efforts to keep the unitary Republic of Indonesia intact, he said.
He said the construction of the airport on one of the country's 92 outlying northern islands was a manifestation of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's commitment to developing the islands' economies.
Development of outlying islands such as Miangas Island was inevitable and therefore, an airport and logistics depot would be built there under a short-term program, he said.***1***
