GOVT PROVIDES RP 3.9 BILLION TO FARMERS GROUPS

Makassar, S Sulawesi, May 26 (ANTARA) - The government this year allocated Rp3.9 billion from this year's State Budget to assist 26 farmers' groups in South Sulawesi engaged in rice and corn raising in the region.

"Each group gets Rp150 million as strengthening of community food distribution institutions in their region," head of the South Sulawesi food security institute Achmar Manring said here Tuesday.

The money, he added, is a business capital for the purchase of food at the different rice and corn production centers in the province.

The rice and corn bought by the farmers groups are not directly marketed, but first stored and processed for a higher price of the rice and corn.

The assistance is given to boost the capacity of the farmers groups in the development of their units of distribution of farm produce covering purchases, storage, processing and marketing, and the development of the units processing food reserves to meet the needs of the farmers group members. ***2***
