MINISTER REITERATES FREE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Semarang, Indonesia, May 27 (ANTARA) - National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo has reiterated free education program for state elementary schools and secondary schools across the country.

"The free education program has been regulated in the Law on 2008 budget, Law on National Education System, and 19945 Constitution," the minister said after attending 2009 Educational Development and Research Network National Coordination meeting at Patra Jasa Hotel here on Wednesday.

Bambang Sudibyo said he visited ten districts and municipalities in Central Java and found out that they had implemented free education program in accordance with their respective versions.

"The implementation of free education is not always homogeneous because it is implemented in accordance with the principle of special autonomy, and the ability of respective regions," the minister said.

He said the ten districts/municipalities he had visited were Kudus, Pepara, Purwodadi, Surakarta, Karanganyar, Sragen, Temanggung, Banjarnegara, Purbalingga, and Banyumas.

The minister also pointed out that the provinces which had implemented free education were among others Jakarta, West Java, East Java, South Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and Maluku.

He said the free education program should be implemented this year, especially for state elementary school and secondary school levels.***
