MUHAMMADIYAH CHIEF DEFENDS FACEBOOK
MUHAMMADIYAH CHIEF DEFENDS FACEBOOK
Yogyakarta, May 27 (ANTARA) - Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin defended the existence of the "facebook" facility on the internet, saying it was a "very useful means to communicate."
"Facebook is a communication tool just like the cell-phone, email and other very useful information technology devices," he said here Wednesday.
He was reacting to reports that certain ulema or Muslim clerics were considering the need to have the use of facebook banned by a fatwa (edict).
Syamsuddin who heads the second largest Muslim mass organization in Indonesia said he had been using facebook for a long time as a means to interact with people. He now had three facebook accounts through which had contact with 15,000 people.
"I also have friends in facebook and there is even a Muhammadiyah group of regular facebook users called 'jamaah facebookiah'," he said..
Therefore, he said, rather than trying to ban facebook, ulema had better issue more beneficial and strategic fatwas, for instance, fatwas to help fight poverty or their congregations' laziness to worship. ***
