RI COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING FOOD RESILIENCE

Purwokerto, May 28 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is committed to supporting food resilience as outlined in law No 7, 1996 on food, a senior official said.

Head of the Food Resilience Agency of the Agriculture Ministry Achmad Suryana made the remark at a national seminar themed "Will Indonesia be able to materialize food sovereignty" at the General Sudirman University of Purwokerto, Central Java, on Wednesday.

As outlined in the Law No 7, 1996, food resilience meant the capability to meet the food needs of each household as reflected in the availability of enough food with secure, equal and attainable e volume and quality, Achmad Suryana said.
According to him, the understanding of food sovereignty should be in the scope of wider meaning by arranging the implementation of the law in a broad and comprehensive manner.

In this context, the concept of food sovereignty had been accommodated in many regulations and existing procedures, he said.

Suryana said that there were some operational steps taken in the framework of materializing food sovereignty, such as increased production and productivity of strategic and sustainable food commodities which gave priority on rising national rice production, soybean production programs, restructurization of livestocks and revitalization of plantation.
Other steps were by improving efficiency and reflectivity of distribution of food like the monitoring of basic food prices and development of community food reserves.

The government was also attempting to stabilize the prices of rice/paddy, corn and soybean at farmer level through the empowerment of community food distribution agency.

"One of the efforts to empower the community is by setting up food self reliance village seen from the aspect of production and local people's purchasing power," Achmad Suryana said.

According to him, at present food self-reliance village had been established in 201 districts vulnerable to food in 33 provinces of the country.
