GOVT GUARANTEES STABILITY OF BASIC NECESSARY PRICES

Padang, W Sumatra, May 28 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said the government was guaranteeing that essential commodity prices and their distribution to various regions would remain stable in the runup to the presidential election on July 8, 2009.

"We guarantee there will be no commodity price hikes in the runup to the presidential polls," the minister said here on Thursday.

Minister Pangesut was here to open an integrated workers' bourse, hand over assistance to capital reinforcement of street vendors and launch a use-local-product campaign.

She said in the last legislative elections on April 9, 2009 there were no significant commodity price increases because commodities could be distributed smoothly, while the government carried out intensive monitoring at traditional markets.

"During the legislative elections which relatively took a longer preparation period, commodity prices remained stable and their distribution was smooth so that there were no price fluctuations in the market," the minister said.

She said the government was continuing to monitor the distribution of commodities and developments of prices in the regions.
Mari E Pangestu said her ministry continued to carry out observations on the developments of commodity prices every day so that it could control it if there were signs of price increases.

"There is no need for the people to worry over possible price hikes in the runup to the presidential race because we will continue to monitor price developments," she added.***2***
