LAWYER SUPPORTS ISSUANCE OF "PERPPU" ON CORRUPTION COURT
Jakarta, May 30 (ANTARA) - Noted lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis fully supports the immediate issuance of a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on the formation of a national corruption court.
"I think President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono should take quick action and issue a Perppu if the House of Representatives (DPR) eventually fails to pass the bill on Corruption Court into law," Todung Mulia Lubis said here on Saturday.
According to Lubis, the people at present were unsure if the DPR whose term would end in September this year could approve the bill on the national corruption court into law.
Even in a consultative meeting between the government and the DPR recently the corruption court bill was not included in the agenda of the meeting, he said.
"It is evident that the DPR does not really want to finish their task of passing the bill into law," Lubis said, adding that the House's reluctance to do so was part of its systematic effort to control and to blunt the role of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in the future.
Meanwhile, the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has also urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to soon issue a Perppu on the formation of a national corruption court.
"If the president fails to issue the Perppu soon, he will be responsible for the demise of the corruption court," ICW activist Febri Diansyah said here on Thursday.
The Constitutional Court ruled in 2006 that a law on formation of a corruption court should have been enacted by December 19, 2009 at the latest. If the deadline was not met, corruption cases investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) would have to be handled by general or district courts of law.
According to Febri Diansyah, ICW would continue to call on President Yudhoyono to issue the Perppu soon.
"The realization of a law on formation of a corruption court is an urgent matter," Frebry said, adding that failure to pass the bill on a Corruption Court into law would weaken the functions of KPK.
Therefore, he said, the president should issue the Perppu soon because the House of Representatives (DPR) was not expected to be able to finish its work to pass the bill into law.***
