PRESIDENT TO ATTEND ASEAN-S KOREA MEETING
Jakarta, May 30 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to leave for the South Korean island of Jeju on Sunday to attend an ASEAN-South Kora meeting.
Besides attending the gathering to mark the 20th anniversary of ASEAN-South Korea relations, President Yudhoyono will have a series of meetings with ASEAN and South Korean top officials from June 1-2, 2009.
Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said here on Saturday that heads of state/government from ASEAN countries and South Korea would attend the gathering.
"President Yudhoyono's presence at the ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit will prove that South Korea is an important and strategic partner of ASEAN, especially Indonesia," Patti Djalal said.
He said the summit was expected to strengthen the relations between ASEAN and South Korea in the 21st century.
According to Patti Djalal, besides attending the summit, President Yudhoyono would hold a series of bilateral meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Lee Myung-bak, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tam Dung.
ASEAN and South Korea started their sectoral dialog relations in November 1989, and then the country gained a full status as ASEAN dialog partner at the 24th ASEAN ministerial meeting in July 1991 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Since ASEAN-South Korean Summit in 1997, a number of agreements have been signed.
In the 8th ASEAN-ROK Summit on November 30, 2004 in Vientiane they signed Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation Partnership, and in the 9th summit on December 13, 2005 in Kuala Lumpur they signed the Adoption of ASEAN-ROK Plans of Action to Implement Joint Declaration.
The plans of action covered the cooperation in the field of politics, security, economy, ASEAN regional integration, social and cultural exchange, international and regional cooperation, cooperation in facing various global issues, cooperation in East Asian region.
South Korea fully supported ASSEAN effort to create Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN) and nuclear-free zone in Southeast Asian region, and ASEAN also supported South Korea in the framework of Six-Party Talks to peacefully solve North Korean nuclear issue.***
