``MANDIRI NUSANTARA``CATCHES FIRE IN JAVA SEA

Surabaya, Indonesia, May 30 (ANTARA) - A vessel named "Mandiri Nusantara" carrying hundreds of passengers from Surabaya's Tanjung Perak seaport to Banjarmasin and Balikpapan in Kalimantan caught fire in the Java Sea on Saturday.

All crew members and passengers survived the disaster, public relations officer of Tanjung Perak seaport administrator, Sri Sukesi
confirmed here.

"The crew members and passengers survived after getting assistance from other three ships' crew which unexpectedly passed near the ailing ship," she said.

The "roll on-roll off (Roro) ship departed from the Tanjung Perak seaport, Friday (May 29) night at about 09.00 pm, she said, adding that the vessel burned about 34 miles east of the Karamaian waters or only a few miles from the Bawean Island, Gresik district, East Java province.

"So far, there is no immediate report on the cause of the accident, but we have evacuated all passengers," Sukesi said.

In the meantime, PT Primavista as the ship owners and the controller yet confirmed about the case.

It was very ironic disaster, considering that Minister of Transportation Jusman Syafi'i Djamal had just made impromptu inspection few hours before the ailing ship left Tanjung Perak Port on Friday afternoon, she cited.
In the last two weeks three boat accidents occured. Previously, two cargo ships collided near the container quay of Tanjung Perak port on Friday (May 22).

Then on Monday (May 25) the "Sahabat Sejati" motor boat sank in Karangjamuang waters due to leaks at the boat's hold.

However, before leaving the Tanjung Perak port, the boat received seaworthiness letter from the Port administrator, she added.
