BANK MANDIRI REMAINS PRUDENT IN EXTENDING HOUSING CREDITS
Surabaya, Indonesia, May 30 (ANTARA) - State-owned Bank Mandiri still remained prudent in distributing housing credits as national economy was not yet fully recovered from the impact of global financial crisis.
"Although the situation is improving we still remain careful in distributing KPR," the bank's director, Bambang Setiawan, said here on Saturday.
He said although the risk in distributing property credits in the country was not as high as in the US prudence was still needed.
"Compared with the US the risk in the country was still relatively low because we did not play in derivatives," he said at an Airlangga University function.
He said national banking conditions were increasingly improving. Bank Mandiri in the first quarter of 2009 distributed up to Rp177 trillion in credits.
"The figures are 30 percent higher than of the same period in 2008. Meanwhile its non-performing loans are only recorded at one percent," he said.
He said Bank Mandiri could collect Rp157 trillion in third party funds in the first quarter of 2009, which was a hike of around 57 percent from the same period of 2008.
He said the development of Bank Mandiri representing banks in Indonesia was in line with the IMF's forecast namely that only four countries in the world able to survive the crisis namely China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam.
In spite of that however, he said, Bank Mandiri would not as yet reduce its lending interest significantly. He said Bank Mandiri also gave a careful response to the central bank's recent decision to reduce its key rate.
Until May 2009, the interest rate in Bank Mandiri was down 1.2 percent. "Indeed we have not reduced it until 1.5 percent but compared with other banks our move is quite progressive," he said. ***
