KPU MAY DELAY OFFICIATION OF ELECTORAL POLLS

Jakarta, May 31 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Abdul Hafiz Anshary said the commission was likely to delay the official announcement of the fixed voters list (DPT) for the upcoming July 8, 2009 presidential polls.

He said the announcement of the fixed voters list could be delayed if KPU found problems in the lists in its plenary meeting on Sunday to discuss data updating of would-be voters.

Anshary said that there were still differences of data on voters between some provinces and districts while not all of the representatives of KPU provincial offices had attended the plenary meeting.

He said that previously KPU had set May 31, 2009 for the announcement of the presidential election voters list. However, it was subject to change.

"The KPU can change any of its regulations, particularly on the date of announcement of the DPT which had been set on May 31, 2009," he said.

He said that the KPU could not force itself to announce the electoral rolls if there were still things remaining unsettled.

The KPU chairman said that there were still problems with data from Papua province because not all of the data from its districts had been collected by the Papua KPU office.

He said that the delay in the announcement of the DPT did not violate the law because under the law the DPT should be announced one month at latest before the polls were organized.

"The May 31, 2009 deadline is set in the KPU regulation," he said.

Anshary said that the KPU had done its utmost in improving the voters' list. It even had written to the political parties to ask for their assistance in encouraging eligible voters to register themselves.

He said that the people were also given a chance to directly check whether their names were really on the lists at the villagers' head offices.***1***
