WIRANTO TO RENEGOTIATE CONTRACTS WITH FOREIGN CORPORATIONS
Bengkulu, May 30 (ANTARA) - Vice presidential candidate Wiranto said here on Saturday that Jusuf Kalla and him would renegotiate contracts with foreign corporations if they won the election later on July 8.
"We will renegotiate contracts with foreign corporations operating in the country and in the future corporations should not give no benefit to the people or at least must divide their profit equally," he said.
He said one of the programs to be focussed on by Kalla and him was improving the people's economy.
Wiranto is the running mate of Jusuf Kalla, the current vice president, who would compete in the election later with current president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Wiranto did not mention names of corporations but if Kalla and him were elected respectively as president and vice president later he said they would review a number of contracts the country had made with several foreign companies.
The head of the regional council of the Indonesian Environment Forum (Walhi), Supintro Yohar, said that some foreign corporations had obviously deprived the people of their rights.
He said the country would be able to assure the people's welfare if it were able to get 50 percent shares of the companies.
"The question is whether the government has self-confidence to get rid of the foreigners and whether it could manage the country's wealth not with the mentality of former colonialized people but with strong mentality," he said.
He said he hoped presidential candidates would tell clearly about companies with which they would renegotiate the contracts so that people would know what their intention was.
"We have often heard such promises but the reality is always the same," he said.***1***
