Jeju, S. Korea, June 1 (ANTARA) - South Korean President Lee Myun Bak warmly welcomed the presence of his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the ASEAN-South Korean Summit on Jeju island.
Speaking at a bilateral meeting with Yudhoyono here on Monday, Myun Bak expressed sincere gratitude for the presence of the Indonesian head of state at the summit amid his intensive activities ahead of Indonesia's presidential election in July.
"We highly respect and express our sincere gratitude to your presence at the summit, although you are very busy at home for the upcoming presidential election," Myun Bak told Yudhoyono.
"I hope the scenic island of Jeju can inspire you with new strength for your activities at home," the South Korean president said at the start of his bilateral meeting with Yudhoyono.
President Yudhoyono in his address admitted he would be very busy after his return home on Tuesday but said his presence at the summit was also important as it would strengthen Indonesia's relations with South Korea in particular, and with ASEAN in general.
Yudhoyono also explained that Indonesian-South Korean bilateral relations so far had improved , especially after the signing of a "Strategic Partnership" agreement between the two countries.
"After the signing of the Strategic Partnership agreement, our bilateral relations have become better and better. Our trade relations have also increased with their value recorded at US$19.3 billion in 2008, and we hope it will continue to increase," Yudhoyono said.
After the bilateral meeting, Indonesian presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said things would have been different if President Yudhohono had not come to the ASEAN-South Korea Summit.
"Things would have been different if President Yudhoyono had not come to South Korea," Djalal said, adding that the two leaders at their bilateral meeting discussed a number of issues, including matters related to Indonesian migrant workers in South Korea, tourism, education, forestry, food and energy resilience, and the North Korean nuclear issue.
At the bilateral meeting with Myun Bak, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Forestry Minister MS Kaban, and Communication and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh. ***
