RI, VIETNAM AGREE TO CONDUCT JOINT SEA PATROLS

Jeju, S Korea, June 1 (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Vietnam have agreed to conduct joint sea patrols to prevent illegal fishing by Vietnamese fishermen in Indonesian waters.

The agreement was reached at a bilateral meeting between Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tam Dung here on Monday.

Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said Yudhoyono and Tam Dung had agreed that the joint sea patrols between the two countries would be implemented soon.

"President Yudhyono will soon instruct National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Gen Djoko Santoso and Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono to follow up the joint sea patrol agreement," Patti Djalal said here on Monday.

He said the two leaders also agreed on the ways how to deal with Vietnamese fishermen who frequently poach in Indonesian waters by giving them legal understanding about the territorial waters between the two countries.

According to Patti Djalal, President Yudhoyono on the occasion proposed the creation of a mechanism in the two countries' cooperation to increase legal understanding on international law and territorial waters among Vietnamese fishermen.

"If we nab the Vietnamese fishermen, there should be a mechanism on how to treat them, because the Vietnamese prime minister asked for Indonesian government's understanding that his country's fishermen did not understand international law and Indonesian regulations," Djalal said.

He added the two governments had started to discuss the solution of Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) borders between Indonesia and Vietnam.

Djalal said the two leaders did not discuss military cooperation in detail but they did reaffirm their commitment to remain independent in the face of the global security situation.
On the occasion, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Forestry Minister MS Kaban, and Communication and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh.

President Yudhoyono and his entourage arrived at South Korea's scenic Jeju island on Sunday to attend an ASEAN-South Korea Summit to mark the 20th anniversary of their relations.***
