PRESIDENT READY TO ISSUE `PERPPU` ON CORRUPTION COURT

Jakarta, June 1 (ANTARA) - The president is ready to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu), if the House of Representatives (DPR) fails to pass a bill on the formation of a national corruption court (Tipikor) into law until the deadline.

"Now deliberations on the bill on Tipikor are still going on in the DPR but if they finish too late, a Perppu will be issued before the deadline," Denny Indrayana, a presidential special staff on legal affairs, said here on Sunday.

The president in principle wanted to save the Tipikor court for corruption eradication in this country, he said.

The Perppu's issuance should wait for the deliberations in the DPR which are tied to the deadline of December 19, 2009, he said.

Meanwhile, the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) recently also urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to soon issue a Perppu on the formation of Tipikor (national corruption court).

"If the president fails to issue the Perppu soon, he will be responsible for the demise of the corruption court," ICW activist Febri Diansyah said here on Thursday.

The Constitutional Court ruled in 2006 that a law on formation of a corruption court should have been enacted by December 19, 2009 at the latest. If the deadline was not met, corruption cases investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) would have to be handled by general or district courts of law.

Noted lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis fully supported the immediate issuance of a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on the formation of a national corruption court.

Therefore, he said, the president should issue the Perppu soon because the House of Representatives (DPR) was not expected to be able to finish its work to pass the bill into law.***
